A truck manufacturer needed an aluminum component for a suspension system assembly. The part had a complex geometry that called for precise milling in order for the tight specifications to be met.

Boyer specializes in complicated parts that hold close tolerances. This part was milled in one setup and required multi-axis milling and turning. The part necessitated tight profile controls. This was accomplished with C-axis contouring to both the outside and inside profile of the part. Since the part was to fit into an assembly with other parts, the edges were chamfered at 45 degrees to take off the sharp edges and ensure a smooth fit.

In order to produce intricate parts in one setup, Boyer puts an emphasis on three critical operational pillars. First, they have the expertise to mill difficult designs. Their machine operators are skilled craftsmen with decades of experience and they have the technology to machine elaborate components from all kinds of metals and plastics. Second, their quality control lab tests the tolerances on each piece that is fabricated at Boyer. This thorough testing reduces waste and ensures the print specifications are met. Third, they put an emphasis on efficiency. That requires a production plan before the machine is turned on to eliminate waste and reduce downtime. It also eliminates the need to change the part over for multiple setups. This has led to a 98 percent on-time delivery of parts.

In this case, the customer received their suspension component on time and milled precisely to design. When you need a complex part manufactured, contact Boyer, where quality is standard.

The part was a cylinder designed with a very thin wall and an intricate lip that had a channel to accommodate a separate fitting and a thicker tongue to lock it in place. The part was cosmetically critical and had to be produced without any marks or marring.

Complex nickel superalloys, such as Inconel, are used in high stress and high heat applications because of their superior tensile strength. It has excellent corrosion resistance, which makes it a preferred material for aeronautic applications where the parts are exposed to harsh ambient conditions. However, Inconel is difficult to machine. Many machine shops would refuse to mill this kind of project. However, Boyer specializes in machining intricate metals and plastics. All machining and milling services are performed in-house to ensure quality control of each part. Parts go through rigid quality testing and documentation during production.

The aesthetics of this part were also critical. Each part had to be finished without any marks, including fingerprints or smudges. Boyer has the expertise and machinery to accommodate requests for cosmetically-critical and clean parts.

If you are in need of the machining of intricate parts fabricated from complex metals, or if you need an enhanced finish for your parts, contact Boyer, where quality is standard.

But the very tedious process also required the tooling of a nylon insert that would be placed precisely inside each nut.

Boyer specializes in machining both complex metal and plastic parts. They have the ability to mill intricate parts, such as these very small aerospace parts. In this case, the stainless steel part was milled with a hex head and then counterbored to hold the insert. Instead of using an injection molded method to create the insert, the nylon part was laser cut. This creates a tighter and more exact fit between the two parts.

Boyer also assembled the two parts for the customer. The nylon insert was fixed in the stainless steel nut to specifications. The parts were also electrostatically cleaned and inspected for quality control before being packaged and delivered. All Boyer parts are cleaned, tested and documented before being shipped out.

If you are looking for a fabrication solution for intricate parts using either machined metals or plastics (or both), contact Boyer where quality is standard.

On top of that, the tolerances were very tight for this piece.

Boyer specializes in very complicated machining. We have the expertise and equipment to produce intricate workpieces. In this case, we decided to machine this part with one setup. Most machine shops would produce this part with multiple setups. The problem with that has to do with quality control and waste. We were also able to produce the piece faster than a multiple setup situation would have allowed.

It was also important to the customer that this part not only function properly, but it was aesthetically pleasing. Boyer worked with the customer’s product engineer to make sure the parts were free of blemishes and met their standards.

The part also had a budget. Like all parts produced at Boyer, the part was produced within the cost parameters set by the purchasing agent.

If you are designing complicated parts that require tight tolerances, take a look at Boyer.
In the mid-20th century, the concept of Numerical Control (NC) was developed, allowing machines to be controlled through a set of numerical instructions.

The development of punched tape and early computer systems facilitated the automation of machine tool operations.

In the late 1940s and early 1950s, the first CNC (Computerized Numerical Control )machines were developed, combining NC technology with early computers. John T. Parsons and Frank L. Stulen are credited with building the first CNC machine, which used punched cards to control its movements.

Machine turning has revolutionized the manufacturing industry since it was first introduced in 1952 in the form of the Cincinnati Milacron Hydrotel.

Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, turning technology continued to evolve rapidly, incorporating more powerful computers and software.

CNC turning machines became more accessible and widespread, revolutionizing the manufacturing industry with their precision, repeatability, and efficiency.
