A bike manufacturer needed a wheel hub part built out of a single piece of aluminum. The workpiece was very complex. It required multiple channels and recessed bores, multifaceted surface geometry, counterbores and threaded grooving with tapered bores. On top of that, the tolerances were very tight for this piece.
Boyer specializes in very complicated machining. We have the expertise and equipment to produce intricate workpieces. In this case, we decided to machine this part with one setup. Most machine shops would produce this part with multiple setups. The problem with that has to do with quality control and waste. By machining the part with a single setup, we ensured a more precise part with fewer lost pieces. We were also able to produce the piece faster than a multiple setup situation would have allowed.
It was also important to the customer that this part not only function properly, but it was aesthetically pleasing. It had a very unique design that the customer wanted to showcase. Boyer worked with the customer’s product engineer to make sure the parts were free of blemishes and met their standards.
The part also had a budget. Like all parts produced at Boyer, the part was produced within the cost parameters set by the purchasing agent.
